Saskatoon Cart Placement Rules Before 7 a.m.
A correctly scheduled cart can still be skipped when the lid is open, clearance is missing, waste is outside the cart or the truck cannot safely approach it.
Wheels facing the curb
- Place the cart on the street in front of its assigned residence.
- Keep it off the sidewalk.
- Do not block a neighbour’s driveway.
- Use level ground and stay off snowbanks.
Wheels facing the fence
- Use the designated collection area at the lane edge.
- Keep the lane, driveway and gate open.
- Watch for low overhead utility lines.
- Clear snow or debris that blocks safe lifting.
Group carts in one direction
- Use the designated centre collection area.
- Face all carts in the same direction.
- Follow the City’s special layout for the property.
- Avoid parking and large street objects nearby.
Waste is wedged inside
The 120-litre black cart is intended for roughly two to three 45-litre kitchen bags. Material packed tightly against the walls may stay inside when the cart is tipped.
Use flat ground and bag garbage
City carts are designed to withstand strong winds on a level surface, but a tipped cart may not be collected. Retrieve empty carts promptly and label each cart with the home address.
Weather Saskatoon: Snow, Wind and Holiday Collection
The forecast helps residents prepare, but it does not decide whether collection is cancelled. The City service-alert page is the source for route delays and replacement dates.
Clear a safe collection point
Use level ground, remove snow around the cart and preserve the full clearance area. A cart on a snowbank cannot be lifted safely.
Do not assume the truck will return
If a cart blows over before the truck arrives, collection may be missed. Bag black-cart waste, close every lid and bring carts back after emptying.
Follow the named replacement date
A City alert may apply to selected neighbourhoods, cart colours or lanes. Place the cart out before 7 a.m. on the rescheduled date stated in the alert.

City of Saskatoon Garbage Complaints and Missed Pickup
Report the correct stream to the correct operator. The City handles black and green carts. Loraas handles curbside blue recycling carts.
The City or Loraas may not return when the cart was late, blocked, incorrectly positioned, overfilled, contaminated or blown over before collection.
“I am reporting a missed [black / blue / green / shared-bin] collection at [full address]. The official calendar showed collection on [date]. The cart was out before 7 a.m., upright, closed and at least 1.2 metres from obstacles. I checked the service-alert page and found [no alert / this alert].”
Saskatoon Recycling PDF: What the Official Guide Means at the Cart
The current Saskatoon programme remains under the City/Loraas collection arrangement in 2026. The City’s transition to an SK Recycles-led residential collection model is scheduled for 2028, so residents should use Saskatoon’s current City and Loraas guidance now.

- Flattened cardboard and boxboard.
- Mixed paper, newspapers and office paper.
- Plastic containers marked #1 through #7.
- Household tin and aluminum.
- Accepted household food-grade glass.
- Shredded paper inside one clear, tied bag.
Common contamination
- Black plastic and Styrofoam.

Accepted materials can differ before Saskatoon’s planned 2028 collection transition. Follow the current City/Loraas list for the blue cart and use SARCAN or Waste Wizard for other packaging.
Green Cart Schedule, Liners, Freezing and Yard-Waste Limits
Green Cart collection occurs year-round from the same location as the black and blue carts. The collection frequency changes in winter, but the preparation rules do not.
Food scraps and soiled paper
Fruit, vegetables, grains, coffee grounds, paper filters, tea bags, eggs, meat, seafood, dairy, baked goods and accepted food-soiled paper.
Place it in loose
Most accepted leaves, grass and small yard material can go directly into the cart without a plastic bag.
Keep these out
Pet waste, ordinary plastic bags, Styrofoam, diapers, glass, metal packaging and elm wood do not belong in the Green Cart.
Paper or certified compostable
- Place organics directly in the cart.
- Use a 100% paper liner.
- Use a BPI-certified compostable liner.
- Do not use grocery bags or ordinary biodegradable plastic.
Loosen material before collection
- Line the bottom with newspaper or cardboard.
- Let wet yard material dry first.
- Set the cart out each scheduled collection.
- Gently loosen frozen contents with a broom or shovel handle.
Tree trimmings longer than 60 cm or thicker than 2 cm are not Green Cart material. Elm wood must go promptly to the Saskatoon landfill and cannot be stored or used as firewood.
2026 Saskatoon Cart Sizes, Utility Rates and Swap Fee
Waste services appear as monthly utility fees. Black-cart cost depends on size; blue and green services have their own programme charges.

The ordinary address calendar is designed for eligible curbside homes. Shared-bin and commercial properties can follow different schedules.
Follow the building’s collection point, access and sorting rules. Keep parked vehicles away from the shared-bin lifting area.
Assisted Waste Collection: Official Application Details
The free, permanent programme helps eligible curbside residents who cannot move carts and have no capable household member available to do it.
Physical inability to move carts
An authorized healthcare professional must certify the need. Do not attach unrelated medical notes.
All three carts in one approved location
Black, blue and green carts must be stored together where collection staff can retrieve and return them.
Accessible and ready by 7 a.m.
Lids must close, the approved path must remain accessible and all material must be inside City-owned carts.
- Retrieve carts from the approved on-property location.
- Move them to the collection vehicle.
- Return them to the same approved location.
- Collect black, blue and green carts on their normal schedules.
- Furniture or large items.
- Material outside the carts.
- Inaccessible carts or locked paths.

Furniture, Mattresses, Appliances and Extra Waste
Saskatoon does not provide an ordinary curbside bulky-item pickup beside the black cart. Use reuse, Curbside Swap, private hauling, a stewardship depot or the Material Recovery Centre.
Do not leave it beside the cart
Donate usable furniture, list it during an eligible Curbside Swap, arrange private hauling or take it to the correct disposal facility.

Mattresses do not fit regular carts. Use Waste Wizard for current recycling, private-hauler or landfill options.
Separate divertible material
Many appliances and scrap-metal items can be dropped off separately. Refrigerant appliances carry a per-item handling fee.
A couch, loose bags, broken shelving, renovation debris and paint do not become one acceptable load because they are placed together. Plan each material stream before move-out day.
Material Recovery Centre: Hours, Fees and Before-You-Go Checklist
The Saskatoon Regional Waste Management Centre at 42 Valley Road combines free Sort & Go diversion with paid Scale & Pay disposal.
- Clean accepted recycling.
- Small appliances and electronics.
- Scrap metal and bicycles.
- Household batteries under programme limits.
- Used oil, filters and antifreeze within limits.
- Up to 10 rimless tires per customer.
- $20 entrance fee for vehicles entering to be weighed.

Before Leaving Home
Separate recycling, electronics, metal, oil, tires, appliances and garbage before arrival. Mixing everything can add time and cost.
Facility staff do not unload personal vehicles. Bring another person when an item cannot be handled safely alone.
Weekends become busier, particularly after 9:30 a.m. Arriving earlier can reduce waiting.
Residents may bring up to 12 litres of used liquid or solid cooking oil. Empty it into the collection container yourself and take the empty household container home.
Dispose of removed elm wood promptly to reduce Dutch elm disease risk. The annual elm-pruning ban runs from April 1 through August 31, but previously removed or fallen elm wood still requires proper disposal.
2026 Saskatoon Household Hazardous Waste Schedule
Household hazardous waste is accepted at the Material Recovery Centre every Wednesday beginning May 6, 2026, plus two published Saturday events.
- Flammable liquids and household fuels.
- Corrosive or toxic cleaners.
- Pesticides and pool chemicals.
- Aerosols and small non-refillable cylinders.
- Fluorescent bulbs and mercury products.
- Solvents, thinners and automotive additives.
- Commercial hazardous waste.
- Asbestos and renovation material.
- Sharps and biological waste.
- Explosives, ammunition and fireworks.
- Unlabelled or leaking containers.
- Large 70-litre or 205-litre drums.
Containers used for gasoline will not be returned. Keep products sealed, upright and identified before driving.
Paint can go to participating SARCAN depots. Batteries, electronics, used oil, filters and antifreeze have year-round options at the MRC or other stewardship locations.
