Garbage is collected every other week. Eligible residential Green Bins, Blue/Grey Boxes and yard waste are collected weekly. Material may be placed out after 5 p.m. the night before and must be ready no later than 7 a.m.

Niagara Region Garbage Collection Schedule Today
Use this planning helper after you know the property’s normal weekday. It follows the Area A/B rotation printed in Niagara Region’s January 2026–January 2027 guide and includes the two published Friday-to-Saturday holiday shifts.

A Area A municipalities
Area A uses the blue-green weeks in the official annual calendar.
B Area B municipalities

Properties in the same municipality may have different weekdays, collection points or eligibility. Apartments, mixed-use buildings, designated business areas and new developments can also have different instructions.

Collection frequency depends on the waste stream. Do not hold weekly material until the next garbage week.
Niagara Garbage Rules: Bag Limit, Container Size, Weight and Tags
Two bags or cans
Eligible residents may normally place out two bags or cans every other week.

A garbage bag or can cannot exceed the published height.
61 cm / 24 in
Use a collection-safe can with outside handles and a removable lid.
22.7 kg / 50 lb
Overweight bags, cans or bundles may be left behind.
Do this before 7 a.m.
- Bag garbage inside the can; do not leave loose waste in the container.
- Keep bags below the top lip of the can.
- Use exterior handles and a removable lid.
- Separate garbage from recycling, organics and yard waste.
- Shovel a clear winter collection space.
Avoid these common problems
- Do not place bags on a road, sidewalk, walking path or bike lane.
- Do not balance material on a snowbank.
- Do not place unbagged household garbage inside a can.
- Do not use the curb for construction or renovation waste.
- Do not hide hazardous waste inside black bags.
Extra garbage tags
$3.30 per tag
Niagara Region lists garbage tags at $3.30 each and states that tags are non-refundable.
Wrap it around the neck
Place one tag around the neck of each additional eligible garbage bag.
Put it on the material
For an extra can, place the tag on top of the bagged material—not on the exterior of the can.
Exemptions when two bags are not enough
Eligible households with a child under four may apply when unavoidable diaper waste exceeds the limit.
Eligible residential daycares may apply with required licensing or income documentation.
Additional non-hazardous medical waste may qualify with health-care verification.
Residents physically unable to move containers may ask the Waste Info-line about eligibility.
Diaper, daycare, medical and group-home exemptions generally require the eligible property to participate fully in weekly Green Bin and recycling programmes.
Niagara Region Blue Box and Grey Box Recycling in 2026
Eligible residential recycling remains weekly. Circular Materials manages the residential programme and Miller Waste Systems provides Niagara collection support.
Expanded Ontario material list
- Hot and cold beverage cups, including coffee cups.
- Black plastic packaging.
- Flexible packaging such as chip bags and candy wrappers.
- Plastic straws, cutlery and plates.
- Drink and frozen-food pouches.
- Toothpaste tubes and deodorant sticks.
- Ice-cream tubs and frozen-juice containers.
Non-residential recycling changed
Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, Niagara Region stopped curbside recycling collection for non-eligible sources such as many businesses, institutions, places of worship, non-profits and community facilities.
Affected properties need private recycling service or an eligible drop-off option.
Containers and packaging
- Empty food and liquid residue.
- Compress cans, bottles and cartons where practical.
- Do not place loose plastic bags in the Blue Box.
- Use a safe rigid substitute container only when contents remain visible.
Paper, cardboard and designated bags
- Flatten and tie large cardboard.
- Keep a cardboard bundle within 90 × 90 × 90 cm.
- Bundle accepted plastic bags together and place them in the Grey Box.
- Secure light material on windy collection days.

Green Bin and Yard Waste Rules That Reduce Garbage
No published number limit
Food scraps, coffee grounds, filters, tea bags, food-soiled paper, meat, bones, dairy and other accepted organics can go out weekly.
Paper or certified compostable
Use newspaper, flyers, cardboard, paper food-waste bags or certified compostable bags. Plastic grocery bags are not accepted as liners.
A liner is required
Pet waste, kitty litter, wood shavings and completely cold fireplace ashes must be contained in an accepted liner.
Green Bin substitute container requirements
Weekly leaf and yard waste
Weekly year-round service applies to single-family homes and apartments with two to six units.
There is no published limit on correctly prepared yard-waste bags placed out each week.
Leave grass clippings on the lawn or take them to an eligible depot for free.
Twigs and clippings in regular yard waste must be no more than 1.5 cm in diameter and 30.5 cm long. Larger branches follow the seasonal bundle programme below.
Branch Collection and Christmas Tree Dates from the Official PDF
May 4–29 and Oct. 26–Nov. 20, 2026
- Place bundles out by 7 a.m. on the regular collection day.
- Tie branches securely with twine.
- Maximum bundle weight: 22.7 kg / 50 lb.
- Maximum bundle size: 1.5 m long and 0.5 m in diameter.
- Individual branches cannot exceed 7 cm in diameter.
Jan. 5–9, 2026 and Jan. 4–8, 2027
- Use the property’s regular collection day.
- Remove lights, ornaments, tinsel and the stand.
- Do not place the tree inside a plastic bag.
- Do not bury or balance the tree on a snowbank.
- Book an artificial tree as an eligible large item.
If weather delays a real-tree pickup, leave the correctly prepared tree at the end of the driveway unless Niagara Region publishes another instruction.
Niagara Region Garbage Collection Holiday Schedule
Niagara does not use a universal rule that automatically delays every statutory holiday. Check the dated holiday notice, Waste app or address result before moving your normal collection day.
Official notices state no change
Niagara Region’s Canada Day notices state that curbside waste collection continues without a schedule change. Confirm the current year’s notice or app alert before set-out.

Two extra bags or cans
Residential properties may place two extra bags or cans per unit without tags on their first garbage day after Dec. 25.
Do not assume collection moves one day later. Follow the current address calendar unless Niagara Region publishes a dated service change.
Niagara Region Large-Item Pickup: Booking, Limits and Contractors
Large household items are collected only after a confirmed request. A pile beside regular garbage is not an automatic booking.
Two working days
Submit the request at least two working days before the regular garbage day.
Four accepted items
The limit applies per garbage collection and per eligible residential unit.
Not collected curbside
Take appliances and metal household items to an eligible depot or private scrap-metal service.

Large-item set-out checklist
- Wait for confirmation before putting the item outside.
- Place only the item or pieces included in the request.
- Do not stack loose waste on top of furniture.
- Dismantle the item when practical and safe.
- Keep construction, renovation and demolition material separate.
- Ask the contractor about wrapping requirements for a contaminated mattress or upholstered item.
The programme is generally for single-family homes and two-to-six-unit apartment buildings. Larger buildings and some mixed-use properties must confirm eligibility with the property manager or Region.
Missed Garbage, Green Bin, Yard Waste or Recycling Pickup
Before reporting a missed collection, check whether it was the correct weekday, correct Area week, correct stream and a collection-ready set-out.
Was the material eligible?
- The address lookup showed collection that day.
- Garbage was due during the property’s Area week.
- Material was ready before 7 a.m.
- Nothing was placed out before 5 p.m. the previous day.
- Bags, cans and bundles met the weight limit.
- Each extra garbage bag or can had a valid tag.
- A car, ditch, snowbank or construction area did not block access.

Household hazardous-waste safety rules
- Use original or clearly labelled containers.
- Securely cap and seal every container.
- Maximum liquid total: 40 litres per day.
- Maximum individual liquid container: 20 litres.
- Maximum fluorescent tubes or bulbs: 15 per day.
- Oil, gasoline and fuel cannot be decanted at the depot.
- Containers used for oil or fuel are not returned.
- Only Niagara residents may use the household programme.
- Commercial hazardous waste is not accepted.
Keep chemicals in separate, sealed containers and secure them upright during transport. Turn off the vehicle engine before unloading and follow the attendant’s directions.

Standard curbside pattern
Normally follows the two-bag garbage limit, weekly organics/recycling and eligible yard-waste service.
Check building instructions
Some larger buildings receive curbside garbage, but collection points, containers and large-item eligibility can differ.
Do not assume residential recycling
Many non-residential properties lost regional curbside recycling service on Jan. 1, 2026 and need a private provider.
Collection may require approval
A new property or redevelopment may need a commencement-of-collection application before service begins.
