What Changed in City of Windsor Garbage Collection for 2026?
The official PDF warns that residents may receive multiple collections on the same day. Keep garbage, Green Bin, Blue Cart and yard waste separated so each crew can reach the correct material.
The City stated that no new or additional Green Bin charge was being added to Windsor residents’ 2026 property-tax bills for the programme rollout.
City of Windsor Garbage Collection Rules Before Pickup
Set material out correctly
- Confirm the correct date and collection stream.
- Have all scheduled material ready before 6:00 a.m.
- Place street collection at the curb or road edge, not in the roadway.
- Keep containers visible and away from parked vehicles.
- Keep Green Bin and recycling carts separated from other objects.
- Bag regular garbage inside an approved hard-sided container.
- Keep every stream separate when several collections share a date.
Do not do this
- Set garbage out during the wrong alternating week.
- Wait until the collection truck is visible.
- Overfill containers or balance bags on top.
- Tie or fasten the garbage-can lid to the container.
- Hide containers behind cars, snowbanks or construction bins.
- Mix yard waste, recycling or chemicals with regular garbage.
- Use damaged carts with missing wheels, handles or lift bars.
The current web schedule says not before 6:00 p.m., while the printed 2026–2027 calendar says not before 7:00 p.m. Setting material out after 7:00 p.m. satisfies the stricter instruction.
Use the road edge
Keep containers off the travelled roadway while leaving a clear and reachable collection point.
Use the alley edge
Place garbage on the ground or on a stand no higher than 16 inches at the alley edge.
Normal residential collection can continue until 5:00 p.m. Yard-waste collection can continue until 10:00 p.m.
Windsor Garbage Containers, Weight Limits and Rejection Rules

- Two handles and a water-tight lid.

- Approved 48- or 96-gallon capacity.

Loose material creates cut and needle-stick risks. Bag garbage before placing it in the approved container.
Broken glass
Seal broken glass in a cardboard box, tape it closed, clearly mark it “broken glass,” and place the box with regular garbage.
Loose ashes or sawdust
Wet the material down, place it in a cardboard box under 40 lb and label the box clearly before regular collection.

Place the Green Bin roughly one foot behind the curb.
Arrows face the street
Position the wheels toward the house and lid arrows toward the street.
Leave one metre
Keep the bin clear of carts, vehicles, structures and other obstacles.
Harden before disposal
Place fats, oils or grease in a paper cup and chill or freeze it. Only solidified material is accepted in the Green Bin.
Check certification
Use bags carrying the required BPI or BNQ certification. Ordinary plastic bags are not accepted.
The collector found a placement problem or unacceptable material and could not empty the bin. Correct the issue before the next collection rather than calling it a normal missed pickup.
Windsor residents should call 311 for the EWSWA repair and request programme. The Green Bin is registered to the address and should remain with the property when a resident moves.
Windsor Blue Cart Recycling Schedule and 2026 Sorting Rules
Windsor uses bi-weekly, single-stream Blue Cart recycling. Accepted paper, fibre, plastic, foam, metal and glass packaging can go together when prepared according to current Circular Materials instructions.
Flatten and empty
Flatten cardboard to no more than approximately 60 by 60 cm. Empty boxboard, cartons and paper packaging.
Remove food residue
Accepted items now include many rigid containers, cups, tubs, black plastic containers, tubes and foam packaging.
Empty containers
Place accepted cans, foil, trays, aerosols and glass containers in the Blue Cart using the item-specific lid instructions.
Place shredded paper in a tied clear plastic bag. Remove rope handles, elastic bands and unnecessary outer plastic from paper items.
Have the cart ready by 6:00 a.m., with the collection side toward the roadway and wheels away from the curb. Leave enough room for automated collection.

Windsor Yard Waste Collection Calendar and Preparation Rules
Windsor provides 13 scheduled yard-waste collections: four in spring, four from June through September, four in fall and one January collection for Christmas trees and remaining fall yard waste.
Look for the paper bag
The paper-bag symbol in your zone calendar identifies the scheduled yard-waste date.
No plastic bags
Use paper yard-waste bags, cardboard boxes, acceptable garbage cans or compatible roll-out carts.
No curbside grass June–September
Grass clippings are collected during spring and fall periods, not during the summer yard-waste dates.
Branches and brush
- Cut branches to lengths of approximately 4 feet.
- Maximum branch diameter: 7.5 cm or 3 inches.
- Tie bundles securely without wire.
- Keep bundles and containers under 20 kg or 44 lb.
- Place thorny branches in a box, pail or yard-waste bag.
Collection failures
- Plastic bags.
- Wet grass in weakened paper bags.
- Loose brush or oversized branches.
- Wire used to tie bundles.
- Leaves raked into the street.
- Material placed out on an unmarked date.
Leave correctly prepared yard waste at the curb through the full service window before reporting it missed.
Windsor Holiday Garbage Collection and Extra-Bag Notices
Do not apply a blanket “everything moves one day” rule. Windsor often delays affected day-shift routes after statutory holidays, but some holidays have no collection delay. Your dated zone calendar controls.

Check whether garbage, Green Bin, recycling or yard waste moves in your zone.
Closure may be different
The Public Drop-Off Depot can close for a holiday even when residential collection remains unchanged.
Extra bags only when marked
Some zone calendars mark designated weeks allowing two additional bags. This is not a permanent weekly allowance.
Only place additional bags out when the calendar for your zone explicitly states “Additional 2 extra bags this week only.”
Missed Windsor Garbage, Green Bin, Recycling or Yard-Waste Pickup
Check these causes
- Correct zone, week and collection stream.
- Material ready before 6:00 a.m.
- Approved container within the weight limit.
- No bags balanced on an overfilled container.
- Lid not tied or altered.
- Material not frozen inside the container.
- No car, snowbank or obstruction blocking access.
- No prohibited or hazardous material.
- Cart has working wheels, handle and lift bar.

Never put needles or syringes in garbage or recycling. Collection can be suspended when a worker finds sharps.

Windsor Residential Diaper Collection Pilot
Six units or fewer
The property must receive bi-weekly municipal garbage, participate in Green Bin service and contain no more than six units.
Opposite garbage week
Approved households receive collection on the same weekday during the week without regular garbage.
One clear bag
Use one clear or translucent bag, no larger than 28 by 35 inches, inside a hard-sided container.
An approved address can be removed after failing to set material out for three consecutive registered collections.
Needles, syringes, lancets and hazardous medical waste are not accepted in the diaper programme.
Windsor Bulk Furniture Pickup: Booking, Cost and Item Limits
Two zone dates per month
Space is limited. Call 311 early rather than placing furniture outside first.
$15 per item
A maximum of two accepted items can be booked per residential address and collection.
Curbside municipal residences
Commercial properties and dwellings with five or more units are not eligible for this programme.
Maximum size and handling
- 200 lb or 90 kg maximum per item.
- 1.2 metres or 4 feet maximum width.
- 2.4 metres or 8 feet maximum length.
- Must be liftable by a two-person crew.
- Place at the front curb, including alley-service properties.
Booking and payment
- Call 311 Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Visa or Mastercard can be processed by phone.
- Cash or debit payment follows booking at a Customer Care Centre.
- Payment is due by the Friday before pickup.
- Cancellations are also due by the preceding Friday.
Mattresses, box springs, secured sofa beds and recliners, non-metal desks, tables, chairs, dressers, cabinets, couches and selected vanities.
Appliances, electronics, metal, batteries, bagged material, renovation debris, glass, concrete, railway ties, tires, toilets, paint, chemicals and medical waste.
Even eligible alley-service properties must place booked furniture at the front curb so the crew can identify the correct address.
Windsor Public Drop-Off Depot: Hours, Fees and Before-You-Go Checklist
The Public Drop-Off Depot and Household Chemical Waste Facility are near the northeast corner of E.C. Row Expressway and Central Avenue. Confirm the entrance and current rules before loading the vehicle.

Monday to Saturday: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Closed Sundays and most statutory holidays. The calendar lists the depot as open on Remembrance Day.
Shorter hours return
The printed calendar indicates winter hours restart on November 30, 2026. Verify the exact weekday and Saturday hours before a winter trip.
Separate before arrival
- Accepted recyclables.
- Yard waste other than charged grass loads.
- Scrap metal.
- Electronics.
- Residential household chemicals.
- Eligible tires, subject to current limits.
Fees may apply
- Garbage and mixed disposal loads.
- Grass, dirt and sod.
- Railway ties and shingles.

- Appliances containing a compressor.
- Loads in rental or dealer-plated vehicles.
The printed calendar lists the first four residential garbage loads weighing 1–100 kg at $8 each, later small loads at $12.50, heavier loads at $12.50 per 100 kg and compressor appliances at $20 each. Rates are subject to change.
If both types are mixed in one load, the depot may require two scale trips. Otherwise the tipping fee may be applied to the complete load.

- Separate recyclables, metal, electronics, yard waste, chemicals and garbage.
- Check whether the vehicle or trailer changes the applicable rate.
- Secure chemicals upright in original labelled containers.
- Bring an accepted payment method for chargeable material.

Use the chemical facility
Paint, thinner, gasoline, oil, antifreeze, pesticides, propane and many household cleaners require the Household Chemical Waste Facility.
Use a pharmacy programme
Place needles, syringes and lancets in an approved sharps container. The Windsor chemical depot does not accept sharps.
Report the exact location
Contact 311 for a needle on public property. Do not touch it with bare hands or place it in a thin container.
