Quick Answer: How Waterloo Region Garbage Pickup Works
Regular curbside routes run Tuesday through Friday. Black-cart garbage is collected every second week, green-cart organics every week, residential blue boxes every second week and seasonal yard waste every second week opposite garbage. Bulky items are collected once per month.
Your address has a weekday plus an A1, A2, B1 or B2 zone. A neighbour, old calendar or generic every-other-week calculator may show the wrong stream.
What Changed in Waterloo Region Garbage Collection in 2026?
The March 2026 launch changed more than the container. Many addresses received a new weekday, garbage and organics moved to automated carts, recycling became biweekly and bulky-item collection became monthly.

Who Collects Garbage, Organics and Recycling?
The correct contact depends on the material. Reporting a black-cart problem to the recycling contractor or a missed blue box to the Region delays the solution.
Black cart, green cart and special collections
The Region manages garbage, organics, yard waste, bulky items, cart inquiries, garbage tags, support programmes and regional waste sites.
Residential blue-box collection
Miller Waste handles missed residential recycling, replacement blue boxes and questions about what can be recycled.
Ontario recycling programme
Circular Materials manages the residential blue-box programme and publishes the current accepted-material and set-out instructions.

A green cart being emptied does not mean the garbage, recycling, yard-waste or bulky-item truck has already passed. Leave correctly prepared material out through the collection day.
How to Place Waterloo Region Garbage Bins and Green Carts
The automated arm needs ground-level access, correct cart direction and clearance on every side.
Use ground level
Place carts at the end of the driveway or boulevard, off the roadway and as close to the street as safely possible.
Arrows face the street
The handles and wheels face the house. A backwards cart may not be accessible to the truck arm.
Leave 0.6 m on all sides
Keep two feet between carts and away from blue boxes, vehicles, mailboxes, trees, poles, fences and snowbanks.
Lids must fully close
Do not overfill the cart or leave bags, boxes or other items sticking out of the top.
Nothing on the lid
Do not place an overflow bag, recycling box or loose item on top of either cart.
Do not use a snowbank
Clear a level spot and brush away snow. Carts placed behind or on top of a snowbank can be left behind.
Place material at the curb no earlier than 5 p.m. the day before collection and no later than 7 a.m. on collection day. Remove empty carts and uncollected material by 9 a.m. the following day.

Garbage bags are optional
Household garbage can be placed in the cart with or without a liner bag, but the lid must fully close and nothing can sit on top.
Every overflow bag needs a tag
Tagged bags must sit beside the black cart. They will not be collected inside an old garbage can or without the black cart present.
Broken glass and sharp household objects
Place broken glass or similar sharp household objects in a securely taped cardboard box no larger than 12 × 12 × 12 inches and no heavier than 9 kg or 20 lb. Label it BROKEN GLASS or SHARP OBJECTS, then place it inside the black cart.
Can I exchange my black cart size?
The Region asks residents to use the assigned black cart for approximately six months. A one-time no-cost size exchange is planned for fall 2026. Check the current cart page for the request opening date and instructions.
What if my cart is damaged or missing?
Use the cart QR code, submit a cart inquiry or call 519-575-4400. Normal-use damage can be repaired, but drilling, cutting or permanently modifying a cart may affect replacement responsibility.
Waterloo Region Garbage Bag Tags: Price and Correct Use
Garbage tags are for eligible overflow bags that do not fit inside the closed black cart. They are not a substitute for the cart and cannot be used on furniture or appliances.

Tags are normally sold in sheets of five for $15. Larger quantities use the same per-tag price.
Wrap around the tied bag neck
Tie the garbage bag first. Wrap the tag around the neck and stick the ends together. Do not use the tag to close the bag.
Beside the black cart
Keep each tagged bag visible beside the cart, not on the lid and not inside another garbage container.
- Each overflow bag must weigh no more than 23 kg or 50 lb.
- The black cart must also be present for collection.
- Garbage tags do not expire.
- Unused tags are not refundable.
- Tags cannot be used on bulky items or appliances.
Residents who regularly generate unavoidable extra garbage because of a medical condition can apply for the Region’s medical exemption programme.
Where can I buy Waterloo Region garbage tags?
Tags are sold online and at selected municipal offices, community centres, libraries, Region service counters, transit locations and the Cambridge and Waterloo waste sites. Check the current official vendor list before making a special trip.
Waterloo Region Green Cart: Weekly Organics Rules
The Region-issued green cart holds 100 litres and has a maximum prepared weight of 38 kg or 85 lb. Only the green cart is collected—do not place the indoor food-scraps container or loose organics bags at the curb.
Paper or certified compostable
- Purpose-made paper green-cart liners.
- Ordinary paper bags such as takeout, flour or potato bags.
- Certified compostable bags carrying an accepted certification logo.
- Newspaper or paper egg cartons at the bottom to reduce sticking.
Do not use “biodegradable” bags
- Biodegradable, degradable or oxo-degradable bags without certification.
- Exposed pet waste.
- Liquids or cooking oil.
- Packaging left on spoiled food.
- Material piled on top of the closed cart.
Green-cart set-out checklist
- Lock the handle before placing the cart at the curb.
- The cart automatically unlocks while being emptied.
- Wrap pet waste in paper or a certified compostable bag.
- Loosen frozen material before collection.
- Keep the lid fully closed and the cart below 38 kg.
The Region states that households may request an additional green cart beginning September 1, 2026, for $150 including delivery. Verify that the ordering programme has opened before paying or travelling.
Waterloo Region Recycling Schedule and Blue-Box Preparation
Residential recycling is collected every second week and is managed by Circular Materials. Use blue boxes—not the Region’s black or green carts—for eligible residential packaging and paper.
Flatten and separate fibre
- Flatten cardboard to no more than 60 × 60 cm.
- Empty and flatten boxboard.
- Place shredded paper in a tied clear plastic bag.
- Remove rope handles and unrelated plastic covering.
- Keep hardcover and softcover books out.
Empty, rinse and prepare
- Empty food and liquids from containers.
- Rinse and dry metal, glass and cartons.
- Follow current lid and cap instructions for each material.
- Keep flexible plastic packaging clean and empty.
- Remove absorbent pads and film from foam meat trays.
Using your own blue box
Circular Materials permits resident-owned blue boxes between 60 and 90 litres. The total recycling weight in a container must not exceed 50 lb or approximately 23 kg.
Batteries, needles, syringes and hazardous products can injure workers or start fires. Search the item in Waste Whiz for a safe drop-off route.

A sticker normally means the crew found a correctable problem. Fix the reason before reporting the material as missed.

Waterloo Region Yard Waste Schedule and Container Rules
Eligible homes receive seasonal yard-waste collection every second week, normally opposite black-cart garbage, from late March until late November or early December.
Paper bags, bundles or marked cans
- Paper yard-waste bags that are not overfilled.
- Reusable can under 48 cm diameter and 84 cm high.
- Maximum can capacity of 121 litres.
- Two handles and no lid.
- Bright ribbon or yellow yard-waste sticker.
Cut and tie correctly
- Maximum branch length: 92 cm or 3 ft.
- Maximum diameter: 7.5 cm or 3 in.
- Use jute or cotton twine.
- Do not use wire, tape or plastic cord.
- Maximum 23 kg or 50 lb per bundle.
Accepted yard-waste examples
Leaves, grass, plant waste, fallen fruit, pine cones, correctly prepared branches and undecorated pumpkins are accepted. Remove candles and decorations before setting a pumpkin beside the yard-waste containers.
Plastic bags, reusable fabric bags, blue boxes, old unmarked green bins, cardboard boxes, soil, sod, stones, pet waste, treated wood, pallets, stumps and oversized branches are not accepted.
Waterloo Region Monthly Bulky-Item Pickup
Bulky items are collected once per month on the address-specific date shown in Waste Whiz. Garbage tags cannot be used on furniture or appliances.

Prepare the item before set-out

- Dryer or stove with doors taped shut.
Remove unsafe or excess material
- More items than the monthly property limit.
- Garbage bags piled on furniture.
- Item heavier than 90 kg or 200 lb.
- Pool table, piano or cast-iron bathtub above the weight limit.
- “Free” or “for sale” sign left on the item.
- Unremoved nails or improperly tied bundles.
Waterloo Region Garbage Collection on Holidays
The Tuesday-to-Friday route system avoids many Monday holiday delays. Still check Waste Whiz because Christmas and designated downtown service have exceptions.

Designated downtown collection is different
Designated downtown properties use a separate cart programme, a 6 a.m. set-out deadline and their own holiday-delay list. Bulky items and yard waste are not included in downtown cart collection.

Batteries, paint, medicine, motor oil, syringes and cleaning products require the Region’s hazardous-waste route.

Does Standard Regional Curbside Collection Apply?
Low-density homes
Single-family homes, legal duplexes, farms, rural homes and eligible buildings with six or fewer units can receive Regional service.
Townhouse complexes
Some townhouse developments receive Regional curbside service when access requirements are met; others use private collection.
Apartments and condos
If Waste Whiz does not return a residential schedule, ask the landlord, condominium corporation or property manager about the building’s service.
Black and green carts are assigned to the property through their cart IDs. Do not take the carts to the new address.
