Delta Green Can Collection: Food Scraps, Yard Waste and Branches
Green Can and yard-trimming material is collected weekly from eligible curbside homes. There is no total weekly volume limit, but every container, bag and bundle must meet preparation rules.

- Meat, fish, bones and dairy.
- Bread, pasta and grains.
- Coffee grounds, filters and tea bags.
- Eggs and eggshells.
- Plate scrapings and wooden cutlery.
Paper accepted with organics
- Paper plates.
- Paper towels and napkins.
- Food-soiled pizza boxes.
- Uncoated food-soiled paper.
- Paper food-waste bags.
Leaves and branch bundles
- Grass, leaves, weeds, plants and flowers.
- Tree and hedge prunings.
- Bundle loose branches securely.
- Maximum bundle length: 1 metre.
- Maximum branch thickness: 15 cm.
- Keep bundles at or below 20 kg.
Green Can containers and liners
Label a lidded can
Use a lidded container no larger than 100 litres and no heavier than 25 kg. Free Green Can stickers are available from City Hall and most Delta recreation centres.
Compostable plastic is still plastic
Do not line the kitchen pail or outdoor Green Can with plastic, biodegradable plastic or compostable-plastic bags. Use newspaper, paper towel, cardboard or paper food-waste bags.
Empty the kitchen container into a labelled outdoor Green Can. The City does not provide kitchen pails, but residents can reuse a suitable lidded household container.

- Animal waste or litter.
- Disposable coffee cups.
- Liquids.
- Wax or plastic-coated paper.
- Diapers and used hygiene items.
- Lint and hair.
- Wire, twist ties and rubber bands.
- Rocks, dirt, sod and mulch.
- Stumps, logs and root balls.
- Loose branches.
- Bundles longer than 1 metre.
- Branches thicker than 15 cm.
Wrap food in newspaper, freeze high-odour scraps until collection morning, rinse cans regularly and store the lidded can away from direct sun between pickups.
Delta Recycling Schedule: Blue Bin, Grey Bin and Yellow Bag
Residential recycling is collected weekly on the same regular day as garbage and Green Can material. Unlimited recycling is accepted when it is correctly separated.
Flatten, cut and bundle
Keep bundles no larger than approximately 1 m × 1 m × 10 cm and place them beside the yellow bag.
Contain and label it
Seal shredded paper in a labelled paper bag or cardboard box and place it beside the recycling containers.
Use them until worn out
Old yellow or blue bags may continue to hold paper products. When worn out, place the empty bag in household garbage.
Place containers loose in the blue bin. Clear, translucent or ordinary plastic bags filled with recycling are not accepted.

Never place household or lithium batteries in garbage or curbside recycling. Batteries can spark, overheat and start fires in collection vehicles or processing facilities.

Delta Garbage Pickup 2026 Holiday Delays
When a no-collection holiday falls on a regular route day, that route and the remaining routes move one day later for that week only. Normal weekdays return the following week.
The whole route week moves
Monday moves to Tuesday, Tuesday to Wednesday, Wednesday to Thursday and Thursday to Friday.
Earlier routes may be unchanged
Because regular curbside routes run Monday through Thursday, a Friday holiday does not automatically delay an earlier collection day.

Snow, ice, flooding, roadwork or operational issues may change collection independently of the holiday calendar. Keep material accessible and check City information close to the date.
Missed Delta Garbage, Green Can or Recycling Pickup

Mattresses and box springs must be dry, fully wrapped in plastic and securely sealed. Wet or unwrapped units can be refused because they become unsafe to lift.

The 2026 Spring Clean-Up dates have passed
The 2026 one-time dates were March 30 in Tsawwassen, March 31 in Ladner, April 9 for Wednesday North Delta routes and April 10 for Thursday North Delta routes. Do not place an archive cleanup pile at the curb later in the year.
Bulky household material
Furniture, large plastic items, bagged or bundled household material and selected metal appliances were accepted within the programme limit.
Use year-round alternatives
Mattresses, fridges, freezers, electronics, paint, propane, yard waste, construction material, glass and hazardous products require another route.
During Spring Clean-Up, garbage material was collected first and separated scrap metal could remain for a second vehicle. This programme-specific instruction does not create a year-round scrap-metal pickup.
Free Compost Week 2026 archive
The 2026 event ran March 1–8 at the Vancouver Landfill. Eligible Delta residents could collect up to one cubic metre, with one pickup per vehicle and proof of residency. Watch future City announcements rather than using the old dates.
