Surrey Collection Signal: Check Today, Tomorrow, Your Map Zone and the Correct Cart

Find your regular weekday with Surrey’s address schedule or collection map, then use the 2026 calendar to confirm whether the date is organics plus garbage or organics plus recycling. This guide also explains cart spacing, missed pickup, extra waste, mattresses, large items, depots and property-type exceptions.

Quick Answer: How to Check Your Surrey Garbage Schedule

Surrey does not have one citywide garbage weekday. Your address determines the regular Monday-to-Friday zone, while the 2026 calendar determines whether that week is garbage or recycling. Organics is collected every week for eligible City-served properties.

Step 1 • Address

Find the correct weekday

Search your exact home address through the City schedule. Use the map only for orientation, especially when your street is near a collection-zone boundary.

Step 2 • Stream

Check garbage or recycling week

The blue recycling symbol means organics plus recycling. The black garbage symbol means organics plus garbage.

Step 3 • Set-out

Prepare carts before 7:30 a.m.

Close lids, provide the required clearance and leave uncollected carts outside until 7:30 p.m. because different trucks may arrive at different times.

Fast resident rule

Map or address lookup = weekday. Calendar = garbage or recycling. Rethink Waste = reminders and live alerts.

Select your weekday and date The result will show whether the date is your zone day and whether the 2026 calendar indicates organics plus garbage or organics plus recycling.
Searching “today”?

First compare the weekday

If today does not match your normal zone weekday, it is not your routine collection date. Do not copy carts on another road or across a collection boundary.

Searching “tomorrow”?

Then confirm the stream

Even when tomorrow is your regular weekday, check whether the annual calendar displays the garbage or recycling symbol. Organics remains weekly.

New Year’s Day and Christmas Day

Surrey collects on statutory holidays except New Year’s Day and Christmas Day. The 2026 calendar marks January 1 and December 25 as no-collection dates. Check the live address schedule or app for the correct recovery date.

How Surrey’s 2026 Garbage, Recycling and Organics Calendar Works

For eligible single-family homes receiving City service, the regular system uses three carts with two different frequencies.

🟢 Every week

Organics

Food scraps, accepted food-soiled paper and yard trimmings are collected on every regular collection week.

🔵 Every 2 weeks

Recycling

Recycling alternates with garbage. Accepted paper, plastic packaging and metal packaging must be clean and loose.

⚫ Every 2 weeks

Garbage

Garbage is collected on the opposite alternating week and should contain only material that cannot be recycled or composted.

Garbage, recycling and organics are collected by different trucks. Leave remaining carts accessible until 7:30 p.m.; another truck may arrive later.

Surrey Cart Placement: Time, Distance, Direction and Clearance

Automated collection requires more than putting a cart near the road. Incorrect spacing, vehicle clearance, overhead branches, lid position or cart direction can cause a missed pickup.

Collection-morning check

  • Correct weekday and collection stream
  • Cart outside before 7:30 a.m.
  • Lid completely closed
  • Material placed loosely inside
  • Required side, vehicle and overhead space
  • Handle and wheels facing the correct direction
Common refusal reasons

What can stop collection

  • Cart placed out after the truck passed
  • Open lid or material above the rim
  • Waste compressed or jammed inside
  • Cart blocked by a car, hedge or another cart
  • Wrong cart for the alternating week
  • Contamination or prohibited material

What Goes in Surrey Recycling, Organics and Garbage?

Correct sorting prevents rejection and keeps depot-only or hazardous material away from collection workers. The recycling symbol or plastic code printed on an item does not automatically mean Surrey accepts it in the blue cart.

No plastic bags in recycling or organics

Place recycling loose in the blue cart. Plastic, biodegradable and compostable plastic bags are also prohibited from the green organics cart.

Extra Garbage, Cardboard, Organics and Yard Waste

Do not overfill a cart or leave random bags beside it. Surrey has different preparation rules for each excess material stream.

Extra garbage

Use one pink sticker per bag

The 2026 guide lists pink garbage stickers at $5.50 each. Every extra bag needs its own sticker and must weigh no more than 23 kg / 50 lb.

Place the tagged bag 1 metre from the cart. Confirm the current sticker price and participating sale locations before travelling.

Extra cardboard

Flatten, tie and keep it small

Place flattened cardboard beside the recycling cart in tied bundles. Each bundle must be small enough that it could fit inside the recycling cart.

Extra organics

Use kraft bags or a marked can

Use kraft paper bags or an additional can displaying a yard-waste sticker. Each bag or can must stay within the 23 kg / 50 lb limit.

Tie branches with natural twine and place excess material 1 metre from the cart.

One-time renovation or moving cleanout

Extra-cart orders are not intended to absorb renovation material, demolition waste or a large one-time cleanout. Use an approved waste centre or private service for material that is prohibited or beyond curbside limits.

Missed Garbage, Recycling or Organics Pickup in Surrey

Wait until the 7:30 p.m. collection window ends. A missed-cart report must then be submitted on the next business day—not during the scheduled day and not more than one business day later.

Before reporting

Run this diagnostic

  • Was it the correct weekday?
  • Was it the correct garbage or recycling week?
  • Was the cart outside before 7:30 a.m.?
  • Did it remain outside until 7:30 p.m.?
  • Was the lid fully closed?
  • Was material loose rather than compacted?
  • Were all spacing and access rules met?
  • Was the cart free of prohibited items?
Eligible report

Leave the cart at the curb

After you report, keep the cart accessible. City staff may review collection records and vehicle video to decide whether the driver should return.

If the review finds that the cart was late, blocked, overfilled, compacted, contaminated or incorrectly positioned, a return trip may not be arranged.

Useful phone script

“My address is [address]. The [garbage/recycling/organics] cart was outside before 7:30 a.m. on [date], remained out until 7:30 p.m., had a closed lid and proper clearance, and contained accepted material. Can you review it as a missed collection?”

Need the material removed sooner?

The City directs residents to the Central Surrey Recycling and Waste Centre as an alternative. Recyclables must be separated by category at the facility.

Does Every Surrey Property Follow the Same Garbage Schedule?

No. Service arrangements depend on whether the property is a single-family home, townhome, apartment, secondary suite, agricultural property or privately serviced building.

Single-family homes

Mandatory City service

Homes inside the City collection service area must participate in garbage, recycling and organics service. The charge forms part of property taxation and cannot be cancelled.

Townhome complexes

City service is optional

The internal road must safely accommodate fully automated collection vehicles. If approved, each unit receives door-to-door carts; otherwise private or centralized options may apply.

Apartments

Centralized programme

Participating buildings receive weekly recycling and organics, kitchen catchers, cart-cleaning support and resident education. Garbage may follow a separate private arrangement.

Apartment cardboard

Break it down to 2 × 2 feet

Cardboard must be reduced to approximately pizza-box size. Larger sheets can jam the collection vehicle and may be left behind.

Apartment large items

Book through management

The property manager or strata programme designate submits the request. Scheduled items must use the designated pickup point and yellow Large Item Pickup sticker.

Agricultural Land Reserve

Residential service may be available

Approval depends on route proximity, street-wide agreement, safe vehicle access, suitable cart space and absence of safety concerns. Agricultural or commercial waste is not included.

Renters and suites

Owner responsibility matters

Homeowners must ensure tenants sort correctly. Properties paying a secondary-suite garbage charge can request a 360 L garbage-cart exchange where the correct cart is not already supplied.

Enter your address in the City of Surrey collection schedule or use the Rethink Waste app. Confirm both the regular weekday and whether the date is an organics-plus-garbage or organics-plus-recycling week.
Where can I find the Surrey garbage schedule 2026 map PDF?
Use the official 2026 Sorting Guide and Collection Calendar. Page 14 contains the colour-coded weekday map and page 15 contains the complete 2026 collection calendar.
Is Surrey garbage collected every week?
No. Garbage is collected every two weeks and alternates with recycling for eligible City-served homes. Organics is collected every week on the regular collection day.
Does Surrey collect waste on statutory holidays?
Surrey states that collection occurs on statutory holidays except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Use the live schedule or Rethink Waste app for replacement instructions on those no-collection dates.
What time should Surrey carts be outside?
Place carts outside before 7:30 a.m. Collection operates until 7:30 p.m. Leave any uncollected cart accessible because garbage, recycling and organics trucks may arrive at different times.
How much clearance do Surrey carts need?
Provide at least 1 metre from other carts and fixed objects, 1.5 metres from parked vehicles and 3 metres of overhead clearance. Face the opening toward the street, with the handle toward the property and wheels at the curb.

Wait until 7:30 p.m., check the date, stream, set-out time, lid, spacing, position and contents, then report an eligible missed cart on the next business day. Leave the cart outside after reporting.
How do I put out an extra garbage bag in Surrey?
Attach one official pink garbage sticker to every extra bag, keep the bag at or below 23 kg / 50 lb and place it 1 metre away from the cart. The 2026 guide lists the sticker at $5.50; verify the current price before purchasing.
How many free large items can a Surrey household book?
Eligible households receiving City collection can schedule up to six items per year. Homes with a registered secondary suite may qualify for eight, while participating apartment buildings may receive up to four items through property management.
Do mattresses need to be wrapped for Surrey pickup?
Yes. Mattresses, box springs, mattress toppers and mattress foam must be individually wrapped and sealed in clear plastic. Free bags are listed at the Cart Storage Yard for residents with a qualifying Service Request number.

Final Surrey Collection-Morning Checklist

Confirm the exact address, weekday and stream. Put out organics every regular week and only the correct blue recycling or black garbage cart for the alternating week.

Move carts outside before 7:30 a.m., close lids, keep material loose, provide 1 metre of side clearance, 1.5 metres from vehicles and 3 metres overhead, then leave uncollected carts accessible until 7:30 p.m.

For furniture or mattresses, book first. For glass, batteries, electronics, Styrofoam, paint, oil, propane, renovation material or hazardous waste, use the correct depot instead of guessing at the curb.
