Abbotsford Garbage Collection 2026: Todayβs Cart, Address Schedule, Glass and Disposal Help
Use the official address search to find the real Abbotsford BC garbage pick up schedule. Green compostables are collected weekly. Blue recycling and grey garbage alternate every two weeks, and the separate grey glass bin goes out with recycling. Below you can check what to set out today, read the East/West calendar, fix a missed cart, compare 2026 fees and choose the correct disposal location.
Garbage Collection Abbotsford BC: Quick Answer
City curbside collection applies mainly to eligible single-family homes and duplexes. Search your exact address before putting anything out because Abbotsford uses collection zones and alternating garbage/recycling cycles.
π’ Green compost cart
Accepted food scraps, food-soiled paper and yard waste. Keep plastic bags and packaging out.
π΅ Blue recycling cart
Accepted clean, dry packaging and paper placed loose. Do not bag curbside recycling.
β« Grey garbage cart
Regular household garbage that fits inside the City cart with its lid completely closed.
π« Grey glass bin
Accepted glass bottles and jars only. Place the separate 27-litre bin beside the carts.
Nearby streets can have different zones or alternating patterns. The official address result is more reliable than memory, an old PDF or a row of carts already at the curb.

Garbage Collection Abbotsford Today: Four Checks
There is no single citywide answer to βIs garbage collection in Abbotsford today?β The correct answer depends on the property address and the alternating stream.
Search the complete civic address
Use the City schedule tool. Select the matching property rather than entering only a neighbourhood or postal code.
Read the next collection stream
Confirm whether the result shows grey garbage, blue recycling with glass, or the weekly green compost cart.
Check alerts before a holiday or storm
Real-time route and weather updates are communicated through the curbside app and City service-alert channels.
Set carts out between 5:00 and 7:00 a.m.
Do not leave food-attracting carts outside overnight. Correct placement is required even when the date is right.

Follow the current live address result and contact the City when the PDF appears different.
The annual curbside guide is normally mailed in early December. The online schedule can also generate a printable property-specific calendar.
Does the Abbotsford City Schedule Apply to Your Property?
Before following any curbside rule, confirm who actually collects the propertyβs waste.
Single-family home
Usually receives City carts and uses the official address-based collection schedule.
Duplex
Generally included in the automated City cart programme. Confirm each civic address.
Apartment, condo or townhouse
Multi-family properties normally arrange private collection. Ask the strata, landlord or property manager.
Business or institution
Commercial, industrial and institutional properties arrange recycling, compost and garbage service with a private hauler.
If an apartment or business does not provide separate recycling, compostables and garbage collection, the City accepts requests for guidance or a site visit.
What Goes in Abbotsfordβs Four Waste Streams?
These are the most common rules. Use the official Waste Wizard for an exact item because similar-looking products can follow different disposal routes.
Food scraps, food-soiled paper and accepted yard material.
Wrap wet scraps in paper and keep the cart clean and closed.
Plastic bags, packaging, pet-waste bags and other contamination.
Accepted residential packaging and paper.
Empty, clean and dry; flatten cardboard; place recyclables loose.
Glass, flexible plastic bags/wrap, foam, food, books and bagged recycling.
Regular household material without a reuse, compost or recycling route.
Contain it inside the City cart and fully close the lid.
Batteries, paint, electronics, oil, propane and other hazardous products.
Accepted glass bottles and jars.
Rinse containers, remove lids and put accepted lids in blue recycling.
Broken glass, bulbs, dishes, ceramics, cookware, mirrors and windows.
Empty containers properly. Food residue and liquids contaminate paper and can cause accepted material to be rejected during processing.
Abbotsford Cart Set-Out Rules
Place carts this way
- Set carts out between 5:00 and 7:00 a.m.
- Put wheels against the curb.
- Point lid arrows toward the street.
- Leave 1 metre or 3 feet on every side.
- Leave 3 metres or 10 feet of overhead clearance.
- Keep sidewalks, roads and bike lanes clear.
- Keep carts away from cars, poles and utility boxes.
- Close every lid completely.
Do not do this
- Leave carts outside overnight.
- Place bags or loose material beside a cart.
- Bag recyclables inside the blue cart.
- Put glass inside the blue cart.
- Pack material so tightly that it cannot fall out.
- Leave a bear-resistant cart clipped shut.
- Hide carts behind vehicles or snowbanks.
- Use a retail or non-City cart.
Abbotsfordβs automated collection vehicles are designed for the Cityβs assigned carts. Containers purchased from a retailer or brought from another municipality are not collected.
Missed Garbage, Recycling, Compost or Glass Pickup
A cart left behind is not always a route miss. Look for a sticker before reporting it.
Correct the stated issue
Common stickers identify cart spacing, bagged recycling, extra curbside material, plastic in compost, contamination, wrong collection week or a clipped bear-resistant cart.
Correct the issue and follow the stickerβs direction. Material may need to wait until the next scheduled collection or go to a depot.
Report a possible missed route
Report through the @Abbotsford City Services app, submit a Request for Service or call the waste line at 604-864-5640, option 1.
Open official missed-collection helpRecheck the date and stream
Confirm the address, weekday and blue-versus-grey alternating cycle.
Confirm set-out time and access
The cart should have been ready by 7:00 a.m., visible, spaced and unobstructed.
Inspect the lid and contents
Check for overflow, contamination, bagged recycling, plastic in compost or a locked clip.
Send useful report details
Provide the civic address, collection stream, scheduled date, set-out time and sticker information.
βMy address is [full address]. The missed container was [garbage/recycling/compost/glass], scheduled for [date]. It was out by [time], the lid was closed and there was no sticker. Should I leave it at the curb, and when will the route be reviewed?β
Abbotsford Glass Collection Rules
Separate glass collection started in June 2025. The 27-litre grey glass bin is collected on the same day as blue recycling.
Place it beside the carts
Keep the glass bin visible with about 1 metre of clearance. Do not place it on top of a cart lid.
Glass bottles and jars
Rinse the container. Labels may remain. Remove lids and recycle accepted lids in the blue cart.
Non-container glass
Broken glass, dishes, ceramics, light bulbs, drinking glasses, cookware, mirrors and windows do not belong in the grey bin.
Secure broken glass so it cannot injure collection workers, then follow the City Waste Wizardβs preparation and garbage-disposal instructions.
Call 604-864-5640 option 1 or email waste@abbotsford.ca. Do not move glass into the blue recycling cart while waiting.
Abbotsford Cart Sizes, Weight Limits and 2026 Fees

The fee is charged per exchange visit. A recently purchased resale property has 90 days from ownership change to request an exchange without this administration fee.
Second compost cart
A second 240 L compost cart is $173 annually; a second 360 L cart is $238. Second garbage and recycling carts are not available.
View the main 2026 annual cart combinations

Cart repair, replacement and moving rules
- Replacement fees listed for 2026 are $121 for 120 L, $133 for standard 240 L, $213 for bear-resistant 240 L and $146 for 360 L.
- Dirty or scratched carts are not replaced solely for appearance.
- New-construction cart delivery should be requested about two weeks before moving, after Final Occupancy is issued.
- Carts stay with the property. A resale buyer should use the existing carts and request changes when necessary.
- Tenants must ask the property owner to submit exchange or additional-cart requests.
- A property can normally complete only one cart exchange in a 12-month period.
Check the 12-digit serial number on the side. Prefixes commonly begin with 121 for 120 L, 521 for standard 240 L, 221 for bear-resistant 240 L and 421 for 360 L.
Extra Garbage, Recycling and Compostables
Abbotsford does not collect loose or bagged overflow beside a cart. Choose the solution based on whether the extra volume is occasional or regular.
Make room before upsizing
- Flatten cardboard and boxes.
- Cut large cardboard so it fits inside.
- Crush bulky plastic containers.
- Place accepted items loose.
- Do not compact material so tightly that it sticks.
Use a transfer station
Garbage that does not fit with the grey-cart lid closed must go to an approved drop-off location for a charge. There is no curbside extra-bag programme.
Change capacity
Request a larger recycling, compost or garbage cart. For organics only, an eligible household can request a second compost cart.
The automated driver does not leave the truck to load loose material. Extra curbside bags, boxes and bundles are left behind.

Extra Yard Waste and the Six-Coupon Programme
Small accepted yard material can go in the green cart when the lid closes. Larger eligible loads can use the Cityβs yard-waste coupons at Pacific Coast Renewables.
Six paper coupons
The annual curbside guide contains six coupons for properties receiving City curbside service.
5 Γ 8 trailer or 1 tonne
Each coupon covers one eligible load up to the equivalent of a 5-by-8-foot utility trailer and a maximum weight of one tonne.
Paper coupon plus proof
Bring proof of Abbotsford residence. Electronic copies, photographs and photocopies are not accepted.
One coupon is accepted per visit. Coupons do not cover food waste or commercial yard waste. Stumps and branches wider than 15 cm or 6 inches can incur additional fees.

Bear and Wildlife-Safe Collection in Abbotsford
Morning set-out applies year-round because some black bears remain active during winter.
Control food odours
- Freeze strong-smelling food scraps until collection morning.
- Wrap wet scraps in newspaper or paper bags.
- Rinse recycling containers.
- Clean carts regularly.
- Store carts indoors or in a secured location.
- Remove ripe or fallen fruit from the property.
- Keep pet food and barbecue residue inaccessible.
Bear-resistant cart area
About 250 Upper Straiton homes on Sumas Mountain must use bear-resistant carts. Outside the area, property owners may request them optionally.
- Bear-resistant carts are available only in 240 L size.
- They are resistant, not bear-proof.
- Unclip every cart before the truck arrives.
- Reclip the cart after collection and secure it on the property.
- The annual surcharge is listed as $5 per bear-resistant cart.
The automated driver cannot leave the truck to unlock it. A clipped bear-resistant cart will not be collected.
Holiday, Snow and Seasonal Collection Help
Use the grey PDF symbol
The 2026 calendars identify statutory holidays with no collection using a grey square. Check your address rather than assuming a standard one-day delay.
Check service alerts
Unsafe roads can disrupt collection. Keep carts off snowbanks and use the curbside app for real-time route information.
Some streams may be prioritized
During severe weather, the City says every effort is made to collect carts, with recycling and garbage given priority.
Pumpkins and Christmas trees
Pumpkins: Remove candles and non-compostable decorations before placing an accepted pumpkin in the green cart. Painted pumpkins are not accepted as compostables.
Christmas trees: Remove decorations and cut the tree into pieces that fit fully inside the green cart, or use an approved drop-off route. Flocked and decorated trees are not accepted as ordinary compost material.
Garbage Collection Abbotsford 2024 and 2023 Schedule Searches
Old-year searches usually come from a saved PDF, old bookmark or search result. A 2023 or 2024 schedule should not be used to choose a 2026 set-out date.
Use the live 2026 schedule
The address tool reflects the active zone, collection cycle and next scheduled stream.
Two zones may appear
When two zones appear in the online information panel, the first may be the former 2022 zone and the second the zone introduced in 2023.
Old calendars omit glass
Separate curbside glass collection began in 2025, so a 2023 or 2024 calendar does not represent the current four-stream programme.
Use an old calendar only to document a past collection date. For today, tomorrow or an upcoming holiday, use the current address search.
New Resident and Moving Checklist
Set up the collection routine
- Search the complete civic address.
- Confirm East or West zone.
- Save the weekly green and alternating blue/grey pattern.

- Save the Waste Wizard and missed-pickup page.
Know who must contact the City
- New construction: request carts about two weeks before moving.

- Rental property: ask the owner or landlord to request changes.
- Missing or damaged cart: provide the address and cart details.
- Carts remain with the property when occupants move.
