How to Place a Prince George Garbage Cart Correctly

A cart can be on the correct date and still be skipped. Use this setup before the truck arrives.

Do these six things

  • Store garbage in a garage, shed or other bear-resistant location.
  • Move the cart out no earlier than 4 a.m.
  • Have it ready by 7 a.m. to follow the stricter live City instruction.
  • Keep all garbage inside the cart.
  • Close the lid completely.
  • Remove carts and recycling containers by 7 p.m.
Common skip reasons

Fix these before calling

  • Cart was set out after the collection vehicle passed.
  • Lid was open or material was overflowing.
  • Vehicle, trailer, pole or recycling box blocked access.
  • Cart was hidden behind a snowbank.
  • Loose bags were placed beside the cart.
  • Restricted material was placed inside.
Why do official sources show 7 a.m. and 8 a.m.?

The printed PDF says carts must be at the curb by 8 a.m. The live City garbage page says to place carts outside between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. Following the stricter live instruction and being ready by 7 a.m. is the safer choice.

Do not use the City garbage colour calendar to decide when recycling goes out. Residential recycling is managed through Recycle BC and collected locally by Emterra.

Prince George Garbage Cart Not Emptied: What to Check and Who to Call

Use this order. It helps you identify a set-out problem before reporting a genuine missed route.

Check first

Was the cart collection-ready?

  • The date matched your zone colour.
  • It was not a weekend or marked holiday closure.
  • The cart was outside by 7 a.m.
  • The lid was fully closed.
  • There was at least 2 metres of clearance.
  • No snowbank or parked vehicle blocked access.
  • No restricted item was inside.
What the RFID tag does

The cart’s RFID tag does not change your set-out instructions. It helps the City track carts, improve routes and record carts that are broken, overflowing or not meeting collection rules.

Do not hide restricted material in the cart. Tires, drywall, hazardous material, propane, electronics, appliances, used oil and oil filters are not regular City garbage-cart items.

Bulky waste

$6 minimum up to 50 kg

The current weight-based bulky-waste fee is listed as $129.75 per tonne.

Selected recyclables

Several materials list a $0 fee

This includes selected batteries, recycling, empty propane tanks, scrap metal, used oil, antifreeze and yard waste when accepted and properly secured.

Secure every load before driving

RDFFG says all loads must be secured. An unsecured load may receive a double charge. Use straps, ropes, chains, bungee cords or a cargo net, and tarp materials that must be fully covered.

Bear-Smart Garbage Routine for Prince George

The night before

Keep garbage secured

Store the cart in a garage, shed or another bear-resistant location.

After 4 a.m.

Move it outside

Do not place the cart at the curb the previous evening.

Before 7 a.m.

Finish the setup

Close the lid, remove obstacles and provide 2 metres of clearance.

By 7 p.m.

Secure it again

No. Large, electronic, tire and construction materials require a landfill, transfer station, Return-It location or another approved programme. Use the item finder above before transporting the item.
Where can I take extra household garbage?
City residents can use Vanway Regional Transfer Station for small excess household garbage loads. The current RDFFG page lists a $6 fee. Larger or commercial loads should go to Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill.
Is the Prince George garbage schedule 2025 PDF still valid?
The 2025–2026 PDF is useful only for historical dates through February 2026. Use the 2026–2027 PDF for dates from March 2026 through February 2027.
