How to Set Out Cambridge Carts: Park, Point, Space and Close
- Place regular residential carts by 7 a.m..
- Park carts at ground level near the driveway or boulevard.
- Point arrows toward the street.
- Keep cart handles toward the house.
- Leave at least 0.6 m on every side and above.
- Keep carts away from cars, poles, fences and snowbanks.
- Close lids completely.
- Keep bags, boxes and other items off cart lids.
- Remove empty carts by 9 a.m. the following day.
Do not hide carts behind parked cars
The automated lifting arm needs direct access. Use the mouth of the driveway when street parking may block the cart.
Do not place carts on a snowbank
Choose a flat, cleared location at ground level. Brush away snow so the cart and any tagged bag remain visible.

Preparation
- Use the Region-issued green cart.
- Use paper or certified compostable liners.
- Drain liquids and oils.
- Lock the cart when placed at the curb.
- Keep the lid closed.
- Maximum weight: 38 kg.

Common garbage items
- Personal hygiene and sanitary products
- Disposable wipes
- Dryer lint, cotton swabs and dental floss
- Furnace filters and garden hose
- Compostable takeout containers
Broken glass or sharp items
Place them in a sturdy cardboard box no larger than approximately 30 × 30 × 30 cm. Tape it closed, label it “BROKEN GLASS” or “SHARP OBJECTS,” and place it inside the black cart.
🔵 Blue box recycling
Paper and cardboard
- Flatten cardboard to no more than 60 × 60 cm.
- Empty boxboard and paper packaging.
- Put shredded paper in a tied clear plastic bag.
- Keep books out of the blue box.
Containers
- Empty containers and remove food residue.
- Keep caps on plastic containers.
- Remove caps from glass containers.
- Rinse and dry metal and aluminum.
- Keep batteries and sharps out.
The 2026 programme includes items such as clean flexible plastic packaging, black plastic food containers, clean foam packaging, empty tubes and eligible non-hazardous aerosol containers.

Extra Garbage, Yard Waste and Bulky Items: Avoid the Wrong Set-Out
Tag each extra bag
- Tie the bag closed.
- Wrap the tag around the bag’s neck.
- Do not use the tag to close the bag.
- Place it beside the black cart.
- The black cart must also be present.
- Do not hide the bag inside another garbage can.
Use the correct container
- Use paper bags or an approved reusable can.
- Reusable cans may be up to 121 L.
- Display a yellow sticker or bright ribbon.
- Maximum 23 kg per bag, can or bundle.
- Tie bundles with jute or cotton twine.
Wait for the monthly date
- Single home: maximum 3 items.
- Duplex: maximum 6 items.
- Eligible 3–6-unit building: maximum 10 items.
- Each bundle counts as one item.
- Garbage tags do not increase the limit.
- Remove “FREE” or “FOR SALE” signs.
Couches and chairs may be up to 6 ft long. Carpet and wood or flooring bundles must be rolled or tied and no longer than 3 ft. Remove nails from wood. Empty water softeners and tape appliance doors shut.

Designated downtown collection can occur Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, with carts set out by 6 a.m. Bulky items and yard waste are not included in downtown waste collection. Cardboard follows separate bundling instructions.
