Sarnia Garbage Rules: Three Lifts, 22 kg and 121 Litres
Weekly service is limited. Each residence receives three regular lifts, and each bag or container must meet the weight and size requirements.

Sarnia Recycling Schedule, Sorting and Missed Collection
Residential recycling is collected every two weeks according to the Zone 1 or Zone 2 calendar. Circular Materials manages the programme, and Emterra handles local missed collections, accepted-material questions and replacement containers.
Every two weeks

Clean, dry and sorted
Follow the current Circular Materials accepted list. Keep batteries, sharps and hazardous products out.
Do not call Marcotte for recycling
Marcotte handles City garbage and special collections. Recycling problems go to Emterra.
Never place batteries, needles or syringes in recycling. They can injure workers or start fires in collection and processing equipment.
Sarnia Yard Waste Collection: Zone Weeks and Preparation
Yard waste is collected on the regular weekday during designated zone weeks from April to early December. Both zones receive weekly yard-waste collection during November.
Paper bags or X-marked rigid bins
- Kraft paper yard-waste bags.
- Rigid plastic container without a lid.
- Drainage holes in the bottom.
- A large “X” marked on two sides.
- Maximum 22 kg or 48 lb per bag or container.
Not accepted as yard waste
- Brush or brush placed in paper bags.
- Soil, clay, sand, stones or root balls.
- Stumps, trunks, mulch or stump grindings.
- Pet waste or animal bedding.
- Water-filled containers.
- Leaves placed on the road.
Accepted yard-waste examples
Leaves, grass, weeds, sod with the soil removed, hay or straw, house plants without trunks and unpainted pumpkins are accepted when prepared correctly. Remove candles and decorations from pumpkins; painted pumpkins go with garbage.
Each individual bag or container must still remain below 22 kg and meet the packaging requirements.
Sarnia Brush Collection Weeks and Christmas Tree Options
Brush is collected citywide during designated weeks. It must be separated from yard waste and must not be placed in paper or plastic bags.

Real Christmas trees
There is no dedicated January curbside tree route. Bare real trees can be dropped off free at Transco Recycling, 387 McGregor Side Road, during January, or placed at the curb during the first brush collection week of May 4–8.
Remove bags, plastic wrap, stands, lights, decorations and every attachment. Artificial trees are not accepted through the real-tree programme.
Sarnia Large-Item Collection: Weekly Pickup and Preparation
Acceptable residential large items can be placed out every week on the regular collection day without a standard booking. The item must still meet the preparation and safety rules.

- Chairs, couches, tables and dressers.
- Mattresses, box springs and bed frames.
- Residential stoves, washers and dryers.
- Strollers and infant car seats.
- Barbecues with the propane tank removed.
- Properly prepared carpet and poles.

The Compost Site is for eligible yard waste and brush from Sarnia and Bright’s Grove residents. It is not a general garbage dump.

The City identifies Transco as a Saturday alternative for eligible Sarnia-resident drop-off. Check the current hours and material rules before travelling.
Yard waste and brush must remain separate. Plastic-bagged material, soil, stumps, trunks, pet waste and mixed loads can be refused.
Hazardous Waste, Electronics, Batteries and Renovation Material
These items need a special disposal route and should not be hidden in garbage, recycling or a large-item pile.

Household hazardous-waste events are held at Clean Harbors Lambton Facility, 4090 Telfer Road in Corunna. Confirm an event date before travelling.
Use an e-waste location
Televisions, computers, microwaves and other electronics are not accepted with regular garbage or large items.
Use a private disposal facility
Drywall, lumber, concrete, tile, windows, doors, cabinets and similar renovation waste require another drop-off or contractor.
